Spend less, get more

There are only so many TikTok pasta recipes you can make, but too many takeaways and your wallet will end up in rough shape.

That’s why we’ve pulled together the best food hacks and discounts exclusively for uni students.

At Bank First, we put our Members first, which is why we do everything we can to make ‘the money stuff’ as easy as possible. Eating well doesn’t have to mean forgetting about your budget. If you know where to look, you can find great food without breaking the bank.

Eating out?

Nothing’s cheaper than free

While the old saying ‘there’s no such thing as a free lunch’ may be true, there certainly are free snacks.

Attend uni events: Many events, like orientation or on special days, will have free food on offer.

Register for the email lists of your favourite restaurants: Most will offer a free food item on your birthday, or other deals like a freebie with purchase.

Score student discounts

From cheap eats to living large, there’s heaps of food and drink discounts for students.

Many food chains and retailers offer exclusive discounts for students. Simply search 'student discounts' to see the latest deals available. To make it even easier, a number of websites even compile all current student deals and discount codes.

Early bird or night owl? Search 'early bird deals' for a range of restaurants that offer discounts of up to 50% your total bill. Get a late-night feed or an early dinner for less – win-win.

Good food at great prices

Some universities and community groups organise food co-ops, where students can purchase fresh produce at a fraction of the retail price.

Check if your uni or local community has a food co-op. If not, you can also score great deals at farmers markets.

Staying in?

Meal prep and buy in bulk

Preparing your meals in advance can save you time and money. Leave your 7pm ‘there’s nothing to eat’ food deliveries in the past by having meals ready to go and stocking up on non-perishable items.

Were you involved in your school’s kitchen garden program? Put those skills to use and prepare nutritious meals this semester.

Start small, by making twice as many portions as you usually would and storing the extras in containers. If you’re not into repetition, freeze some of the extra portions.

Stick to reusable containers; discount stores sell packs of 10 food containers for less than $10.

Loyalty programs

Supermarket loyalty programs can help your weekly shop go further. Some have a small fee but make the most of them and you’ll save more in the long run.

Research available programs. Some let you save up to 10% on one shop each month and access exclusive offers and freebies.

Top tip! Stick to one loyalty program and do most of your shopping at that supermarket; it’ll help you stack up points faster.

The days of uni students having to live off cold pizza and instant noodles are long gone. With a bit of preparation and taking advantage of discounts on offer, you can enjoy a variety of delicious meals while sticking to your saving goals.
